During the American Revolution, various Iroquois Confederacy, Mohican, and New England tribes were forced off their lands. While many moved west to Ohio Country, the Brotherton tribe refused to leave New Jersey. In 1780, tribal leaders issued a formal statement opposing White settlement. Nine years later, they wrote a statement reaffirming their determination to retain their proprietary rights and their “fine place in Jersey.”
Join us on May 7, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT) when our curators discuss the experiences of the Brotherton Tribe and their refusal to leave their native lands with Dr. David J. Silverman, Professor of History at George Washington University.
