In The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic, Manisha Sinha expands Reconstruction’s timeline and focuses on the American West as well as the South. Her bold new approach has surfaced previously underexplored stories of Reconstruction’s achievements and failures. Most dramatically, she encourages readers to recategorize events such as westward expansion and women’s suffrage as inextricable from American politicians’ intervention on behalf of freedpeople and the enshrining of civil rights legislation.
