Book Breaks with W. Fitzhugh Brundage on A Fate Worse than Hell: American Prisoners of the Civil War

Date & Time: March 22, 2026, 02:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

A Fate Worse than Hell: American Prisoners of the Civil WarWhat was it like to be one of the 400,000 POWs incarcerated during the Civil War? Drawing from prisoners’ testimonies, W. Fitzhugh Brundage explores behind-the-lines suffering and concludes that some of the conditions were horrendous by design, made even worse by incompetence. In the postwar era, the memory of POW camps provoked the US government’s decision to codify ethically responsible laws of war.
