Blending history with personal reflection, Representative Jim Clyburn reflects on the lives of the pioneering Black South Carolina lawmakers who served in Congress during and after Reconstruction. Among them are US representatives Joseph Rainey, who was born enslaved in 1832; Robert Smalls, iconic for taking the ship he piloted to Union forces; and Richard Cain, who ran a widely read newspaper for Black South Carolinians.
