In the late nineteenth century people who wanted to come to America, start businesses, and buy homes and buildings had a problem. On the one hand, they generally lacked the collateral required by established banks to get loans. On the other hand, an unregulated money-lending economy could easily trap them in endless debt. In Credit to the Nation, historian Rebecca Kobrin explores the stopgap solution created by Jewish immigrants to circumvent the credit impasse: immigrant banking.
