On July 4, 1776, when the United States declared its independence, American merchants faced a major problem: They could no longer rely on the protection of the British Royal Navy. In the Mediterranean, American merchants were targeted by privateers (pirates), and the US government couldn’t afford to pay them off. This led to a war with the Barbary states, and surfaced American aspirations for international prestige.
