Timing his return in anticipation of the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Marquis de Lafayette conducted a twenty-four-state tour to see the country he had helped create. Lafayette’s visit revived Revolutionary memory, shaped national identity in a period of political transition, and revealed what Americans hoped to remember—and forget—about their founding moment.
